WHAT IS A MECHANICAL COUPLER?

Mechanical Couplers are the cylindrical element that connects the two rotating edges of reinforcement bars, also known as an alternative to lapping rebars. The grade of the coupler should be equivalent to the reinforcement bars which ensures the maximum transmission of the load stresses from one bar to another. The traditional method of connecting reinforcement bars with lap joints continuity in reinforced concrete need not be always appropriate.

The advantages of simplicity and economy in lap splicing are limited to smaller diameter bars. Mechanical couplers offer the solution for splicing for all diameter bars ranging from 12mm to 40mm.

 

BENEFITS OF USING COUPLERS OVERLAPPING THE BARS

  • It is a practical and economical alternative to lap bars.
  • Cut off the dependency on the concrete for load transfer.
  • Easy to assemble, install, and no torque wrench required.
  • Shortens construction cycle times and offers greater structural integrity.
  • It eliminates the reinforcement congestion and thus reduces the material cost by eliminating the length of laps.

DISADVANTAGE OF COUPLERS

  • There is a possibility of misalignment in the attachment of two shafts which will create an excessive force on the coupling, shaft, and bearings, causing them to wear prematurity.
  • Availability of couplers in the local market is very difficult whose ​diameter is more than 32mm or more.
  • It may create structural damage if the grade of the coupler will not be equivalent to the reinforcement bars.
  • Skilled masons are required for the assembling process.
